MANILA, Philippines — Over one million children in Mindanao have been vaccinated against measles and rubella following the launch of a supplemental immunization activity in the region on Jan. 19, according to the Department of Health.
Latest data from the DOH showed that as of Friday, there were 1.01 million children aged six to 59 months who were immunized against measles and rubella during the rollout of the “Ligtas Tigdas” vaccination program.
The figure represented 36 percent of the DOH’s target to vaccinate 2.8 million children in Mindanao.
Among those vaccinated were 230,000 children from Northern Mindanao.
Earlier, the health department warned that a child with measles could easily infect 16 unvaccinated children.
“Through vaccination, hospitalization and death due to measles can be prevented,” the DOH said.
The vaccination will run until February. It will be implemented in Luzon and the Visayas in June.
Measles is a viral disease that spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.
