ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A civilian was killed while a municipal councilor was wounded in an ambush in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur on Thursday.

The fatality, identified as Samsudin Manib, 25, died at the scene of the ambush that occurred in Barangay Tuka at around 3 p.m.

Manib’s companion, Montasir Dimalido, councilor of Sultan Sa Barongis, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound in the body.

Another companion of the victims, Abdulmanap Biang, was not harmed in the attack.

Reports said that Manib, Dimalido and Biang were in a Toyota Innova on their way to Sultan Sa Barongis when a group of men assaulted them.

The gunmen had fled before responding police officers arrived at the scene.

A pursuit operation was launched for the gunmen.
