MANILA, Philippines — Most of the lawmakers who voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte were reelected in the midterm polls, debunking a scenario raised by some quarters that she would find vindication in the elections.
This was according to House of Representatives Assistant Majority Leader and Tingog party-list Rep. Jude Acidre who said that 100 or 86.9 percent of the 115 impeachment signatories who ran for reelection won.
“Just to set the record straight, these results dismantle the narrative that the impeachment was a political liability. What we’re seeing is a public that values courage over complicity. The people have drawn the line – and they stood with us,” Acidre pointed out.
The other 100 signatories, meanwhile, either finished their three consecutive terms in Congress or ran for other positions, Acidre said.
A total of 215 lawmakers voted to impeach Duterte in February.
Even in Mindanao, considered the bailiwick of the Dutertes and where critics predicted a backlash, 36 of the 44 pro-impeachment lawmakers are set to return to Congress on July 1 –representing an 81.81 percent win rate.
“The House acted as it should – as an independent, co-equal branch committed to the rule of law. Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez provided steady leadership throughout. If anything, the results show that his brand of principled politics resonates across the nation,” Acidre stressed.
“This is no time for finger-pointing. We were elected not to protect careers, but to uphold our duty. The people have spoken. And they have spoken in favor of accountability,” he added.
