MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) gave assurance yesterday that it will provide legal help to 11 Filipinos facing jail time in Nigeria.
Reports said 11 of the 15 Asians found guilty of cyberterrorism and internet fraud in Nigeria on Friday were Filipinos.
After confessing to the crimes, a court sentenced them to one year in jail and ordered them to pay a fine of one million Naira or roughly P35,000 for each of the charges leveled against them.
“Our embassy is working on the case. They will be provided legal assistance,” DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said.
The Filipinos were charged by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for their involvement in the recruitment of young Nigerians who engaged in identity theft operations.
