MANILA, Philippines — Up to 112 Filipinos and foreign nationals were apprehended after authorities raided an illegal Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig on Monday night.
Operatives of the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR), Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission and the Southern Police District conducted the operation to track down a Chinese national wanted for estafa.
Lt. Col. Jerry Amindalan, CIDG-NCR southern chief, said the suspect had been under surveillance for almost a week.
“We had been monitoring this Chinese national for days. He was elusive, but we were able to catch him,” Amindalan said.
Operatives said they were surprised to find a POGO hub operating on the 10th floor of the building despite the ban on POGOs.
Rows of computers displaying links to alleged illegal gambling sites were found inside the office, along with mobile phones assigned to each workstation.
Amindalan said the office posed as an IT solutions company, but appeared to be engaged in online scamming.
The company name is not registered with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
“The Chinese suspect may have been working as an interpreter for the facility,” Amindalan said.
Authorities rounded up 17 foreigners and 95 Filipinos inside the hub.
The CIDG said it is verifying if the foreigners have valid work permits. If they do not, additional charges will be filed, Amindalan said.
The arrested Filipinos denied involvement in illegal gambling or love scams, claiming the office was not a POGO hub.
