COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Political leaders in the Bangsamoro region welcomed the reconciliation of two influential figures in Basilan, Gov. Mujiv Hataman and Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay, after their political differences during the May 12, 2025 elections.

On March 10, reports confirmed that the two met during an iftar banquet on March 7 at the provincial capitol in Basilan, in celebration of the province’s 52nd founding anniversary.

The reconciliation between Furigay, who oversees 40 barangays, and Hataman is seen as a boost for business development in the province, with potential investors being encouraged by this political unity. Ronald Hallid Dimacisil Torres, chair of the Bangsamoro Business Council, expressed support for the socio-economic agenda of both leaders, particularly in attracting outside investment.

Furigay, seeking a second term, ran under the United Bangsamoro Justice Party during last year’s elections, while Hataman ran for governor under the Basilan Unity Party.

“I pledge my full support to all the peace and development initiatives of our provincial government,” Furigay said during the iftar event, attended by local officials from the 11 towns of Basilan.

Hataman expressed that he and Furigay will collaborate on programs aimed at improving Lamitan City’s investment potential. The event also saw the presence of Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman.

Business leaders in the region, including members of the Chinese Business Chamber in Cotabato City and the BBC, also voiced their commitment to support the joint economic agenda of Hataman and Furigay.
