MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) successfully rescued a Chinese national and apprehended two of her compatriots during an entrapment operation in Quezon City on February 11.

According to a statement by Acting NBI Director Angelito Magno on Monday, February 16, the operation resulted in the safe recovery of the victim and the immediate arrest of the suspects involved in the kidnap-for-ransom plot.

The investigation was launched after the victim's boyfriend reported her missing.

On February 9, the complainant managed to reach the victim through Viber, only to discover she was being held against her will.

During the communication, one of the abductors seized the phone and demanded a ransom of P500,000 for her release.

Further investigation also revealed that the kidnappers had already coerced the victim into transferring RMB 104,000, equivalent to about P832,000, through online platforms before making the additional ransom demand.

According to the NBI, to escalate pressure on the complainant, the kidnappers allowed a video call in which the victim showed visible bruising on her body.

The suspects issued chilling threats to dismember or kill the victim if the ransom was not settled by February 10. In an attempt to evade law enforcement detection, the perpetrators later moved their communications to the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

Following the report, NBI operatives coordinated an entrapment operation at a hotel in Quezon City on February 11.

As the marked ransom money was exchanged, agents moved in swiftly to secure the victim and take the two Chinese nationals into custody.

The arrested individuals were presented for inquest proceedings on charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

These charges are in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, due to the use of digital platforms in the commission of the crime, according to the NBI.
