BACOLOD CITY — Two siblings died while their grandfather was injured in a fire that hit their house in Purok Lison, Barangay 1, Bacolod City, on Tuesday, May 20.
Chief arson investigator Fire Officer 2 Rolin Paulan of Bacolod City Fire Station identified the fatalities as an 8-year-old boy and his 6-year-old sister.
Paulan said the fire originated from a lighted candle on top of a table near the bed of the two children.
Paulan said that there had been a power interruption in the area since 9 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
The victims were left alone sleeping while their mother went out to buy food at 12 midnight, Paulan said.

Paulan said the fire was reported at 2:19 a.m.
The house made of light materials was totally destroyed.
Paulan said the victims' grandfather, Eduardo, 63, who was living nearby, responded and tried to rescue them.
However, the fire was already big, and the two children were trapped.
Eduardo sustained second-degree burns on his body.
The victims were found near a wooden wall partition adjacent to their bed.
The fire was put out at 2:33 a.m.
Prior to the fire incident, Purok chairman Andy Birzuel reported that there were power outages that started at about 8 p.m. Monday, after a transformer exploded, forcing some residents in the affected area, the victims included, to use candles.
According to reports, the mother of two minors left them at their house at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday to buy food at a fast-food chain.
After the fire was placed under control, the BFP discovered the charred remains of the two victims.
