MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-one areas in the country experienced “danger” heat index of 42-45 degrees Celsius on Saturday, as easterlies or the warm wind from the Pacific Ocean continued to persist, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

According to PAGASA, the highest heat index was recorded in Cuyo, Palawan with 45 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius was recorded in San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Sangley Point, Cavite City; and Virac, Catanduanes.

Additionally, Dagupan City; Barangay Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas; Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; and Iloilo City all registered 43 degrees Celsius.

In Metro Manila, the heat index reached 42 degrees Celsius.

PAGASA said that other areas where a 42 degrees Celsius heat index was recorded include: Bacnotan, La Union; Echague, Isabela; Baler, Aurora; Subic Bay, Olongapo City; Camiling, Tarlac; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Zamboanga City; Musuan, Bukidnon; Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; Roxas City, Capiz; and Daet, Camarines Norte.

At a briefing, PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said that at least 10 areas were forecast to experience a “danger” heat index between 40 degrees Celsius and 44 degrees Celsius yesterday.

In Metro Manila, the heat index was expected to range between 40 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius.

Other areas with an expected “danger” heat index yesterday include: Sangley Point in Cavite City, Virac in Catanduanes, and San Ildefonso in Bulacan (44 degrees Celsius); Dagupan City, Ambulong in Tanauan, Batangas, Cuyo in Palawan and Masbate City in Masbate (43 degrees Celsius); and Tuguegarao City, and Subic Bay, Olongapo City (42 degrees Celsius).

“Easterlies will continue to affect the country that’s why hot and humid weather will persist, especially noon and afternoon,” Aurelio said.

He added that no low-pressure area was monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

PAGASA categorized “danger” heat index between 42 degrees Celsius and 51 degrees Celsius.

It warned that heat cramps and exhaustion are likely in areas with “danger” heat index, adding that stroke is probable with continued exposure.
