MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-nine human trafficking victims were recently repatriated from Cambodia, according to the Department of Migrant Workers.

The DMW said the victims arrived on Jan. 23 on a Philippine Airlines flight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Pasay.

Accommodation and transportation to their respective provinces were provided by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The OWWA also provided support for their referral to the DMW for additional legal and financial help.

A DMW “salubong team” led by Migrant Workers Assistant Secretaries Maria Regina Angela Galias and Jerome Alcantara welcomed the repatriates.

Representatives from the OWWA and Bureau of Immigration (BI) assisted them in facilitating their documents.

The Philippine embassy in Phnom Penh continues to offer shelter and immediate aid to Filipinos seeking refuge while processing their repatriation, the DMW said.

Migrant Workers Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi is leading a team helping victims process their travel documents.

The team is coordinating with the Migrant Workers Office-Singapore and the embassy in Phnom Penh, ensuring victims’ safe return to the Philippines.

17 Taiwanese fugitives deported

Meanwhile, 17 Taiwanese fugitives involved in large-scale online financial scams were deported on Jan. 21, according to the BI.

Authorities arrested the fugitives in May last year at a subdivision in Cebu City.

All suspects have been blacklisted and barred from reentering the Philippines. Some of them have standing arrest warrants abroad.

Last year, the National Bureau of Investigation and state intelligence forces uncovered a fully operational online finance scam hub.

Digital forensics examination had confirmed the presence of romance and investment scam scripts, messaging platforms and other tools used to deceive victims.

“This decisive action reflects President Marcos’ clear policy: the Philippines will not tolerate foreign criminals who exploit our hospitality, abuse our laws and prey on innocent people,” Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.
