MANILA, Philippines — Shipping giant 2GO Group Inc. has launched a new program that aims to bridge the employment gap for Filipinos who dream of building a career in the maritime industry.
2GO said its new partnership with job platform WorkAbroad.ph would offer a training course called Enrollment to Employment (E2E) Program, specifically designed to accelerate the careers of hospitality and maritime students.
In an interview with reporters aboard 2GO’s MV Masagana, 2GO senior assistant vice president and head of travel Francis Chua said E2E aims to train at least 20,000 students by 2026.
Graduates of 2GO’s program will receive certificates that they can use to improve their chances when joining a vessel. Chua said the best performers from E2E may even land offers from 2GO itself, as the shipper gears up its labor force for future expansion.
When compared to traditional internships, Chua said E2E provides hands-on immersion inside a ship. Students are placed under active logistics and sea travel environments, so they participate in day-to-day work rather than simply observing.
“This program gives students something they can’t get in a classroom or a short internship: total immersion in live maritime operations,” Chua said.
“With E2E, students don’t just earn hours, (as) they gain experience, confidence and a headstart in building a career,” he added.
Chua said E2E is also available for senior high graduates who no longer plan to enroll in college, but want to work for a maritime employer.
WorkAbroad.ph, for its part, is responsible for linking graduates of E2E to cruise lines and global shippers in need of more workers. WorkAbroad.ph partners only with manning agencies licensed by the Department of Migrant Workers to ensure job legitimacy.
Chua said E2E, for now, focuses on the engineering and hospitality areas of shipping, but hinted that the program would include culinary in the future.
He added that 2GO is working with some groups on food anthropology to add culinary training to the curriculum.
