MANILA, Philippines — Three people died and three others were injured after their car was rammed by a trailer truck and dragged for several meters along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in Muntinlupa City on Tuesday, the Highway Patrol Group reported yesterday.
HPG spokesman Lt. Nadame Malang said the northbound car had slowed down on the approach to the Skyway when the accident happened at 2:35 a.m.
“The car was supposed to take the Skyway, but the driver hesitated and slowed down,” Malang said in Filipino in a phone interview.
The truck, which was traveling in the same direction, smashed into the car, dragging it for several meters.
Emergency responders rushed the driver and five passengers to two hospitals, but three of them died while undergoing treatment.
Malang did not disclose the identities of the victims out of respect for the privacy of their bereaved family, but said a five-year-old child was among those who survived the crash.
The truck driver, identified only as Reynold, was brought to the HPG road crash incident field unit in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Malang said police are waiting for the family of the victims to decide whether to file cases of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property against the truck driver.
Even without a private complainant, police must file charges in such cases where there are deaths and injuries.
Malang reminded motorists to drive carefully and ensure that their vehicles are in good condition. - EJ Macababbad
