The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) on March 22, 2025, announced the transfer of three Philippine eagles—Lakpue, Lyra Sinabadan, and Kalatungan I—from the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary and the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao to Mahagnao, Leyte, as part of the Philippine Eagle Reintroduction Program.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Three Philippine Eagles were successfully transferred to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Eco-lodge in Mahagnao, Burauen, Leyte, yesterday.
The transfer of the giant raptors – which came from their new sanctuary in Brgy. Eden in Davao City – was considered a milestone event, spearheaded by the non-profit Philippine Eagle Foundation and the DENR, marking a major step in restoring the Philippine Eagle to its former habitat.
The move is seen to help restore the dwindling population of the giant raptor. The transfer is a crucial part of ongoing efforts to establish a breeding population in Leyte.
During the event, conservationists, government officials and private partners reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the species, considered the country’s national bird, replacing the maya.
