ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted several areas in Iloilo on Monday night, prompting schools and local government officials to suspend classes and work in government, respectively, the following day.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake occurred at 6:13 p.m. with its epicenter located approximately two kilometers southeast of Tigbauan.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Iloilo City, Jordan in Guimaras, parts of Antique and Passi in Iloilo.

Intensity 3 was recorded in parts of Aklan, Capiz and Negros Occidental including Bacolod City.

Intensity 2 was recorded in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique as well as in Libacao and Madalag in Aklan.

The temblor, which was tectonic in origin, did not cause damage to property or generate aftershocks, Phivolcs said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education in Western Visayas yesterday said that classes were suspended in 81 schools in Iloilo including 44 in this city, affecting up to 74,243 learners.

The municipal government of Tubungan said that work and classes would remain suspended until today in 19 public schools in the area.

In the nearby town of Oton, Mayor Sofronio Fusin Jr. said the cancellation of classes would allow the municipal engineering office to inspect and assess the condition of school buildings and other infrastructure.

Tigbauan Mayor Virgilio Teruel said school administrators may decide when to resume classes based on the result of the inspection and assessment of school facilities.

In nearby Guimbal town, only the morning session of in-person classes was suspended yesterday. — Bella Cariaso
