MANILA, Philippines — Four areas in the country are projected to experience “danger” level heat index, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its forecast yesterday, Catarman, Northern Samar, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City and Dumangas, Iloilo were expected to reach 42 degrees Celsius heat index.

A “danger level” heat index ranges from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius. Exposure to this level with continued activity may result in heat stroke.

The public is advised to limit prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours.

Wearing light clothing and taking frequent breaks in shaded or cooler areas are also recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Storm outside PAR

Meanwhile, a tropical storm is being monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said tropical storm Sinlaku was located 2,730 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and almost stationary.

It has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kph.

If it enters PAR, it will be named Caloy and will be the third tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.

It may enter PAR by late next week and is expected to recurve between April 16 and 22, remaining far from landmass and not affecting the country.
