BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Four alleged communist rebels including a ranking leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in separate clashes that occurred in the past two days on Negros Island.
On Friday, two separate encounters broke out in Barangay Bia-o in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, which resulted in the death of Reynaldo Erecre, allegedly the leader of the dismantled NPA faction Central Negros (CN) 2.
Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, chief of the Army’ 303rd Infantry Brigade, said pursuing troopers clashed with Erecre’s fleeing comrades, which resulted in the death of a certain Regie Pacheco, alias Dante, said to be the finance and logistics officer of the CN2.
The Army said that soldiers recovered a rifle from Pacheco and a .45-caliber pistol from Erecre.
Lt. Col. Zeigfred Tayaban, chief of the Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion (IB), said the soldiers thwarted an attempt by the rebels to sabotage government infrastructure projects in Barangay Bi-ao.
Tayaban said the rebels were planning to burn heavy equipment being used in ongoing development projects in the village and nearby areas.
Another encounter between remnants of the NPA’s CN1 and troopers of the Army’s 47IB broke out yesterday in Barangay Binobohan, Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental.
The firefight resulted in the death of two more NPA guerrillas and recovery of rifle, a pistol, ammunition and a grenade, the Army said.
