COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Four villagers were badly hurt in a grenade blast that ripped through a residential area in Barangay Mother Poblacion in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur on Thursday night, December 4.
Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Baganian Ampatuan and officials of the Maguindanao del Sur Provincial Police Office separately told reporters on Friday that the explosion injured four residents of Sitio Malinis in Barangay Mother Poblacion, Ryan Obpon, 51, Abdulazis Saludin, 20, Nasrullah Unayan, 27, and the 24-year-old Jonalyn Mamay.
Police investigators and barangay officials said the victims were close to the spot where a 40 millimeter grenade projectile, fired from a distance using a launcher, landed and went off.
Police officials in the municipality and intelligence agents from units of the Army's 601st Infantry Brigade, covering the 24 towns in Maguindanao del Sur, are still clueless on who was behind the atrocity.
Ampatuan, chairperson of the multi-sector Shariff Aguak Municipal Peace and Order Council, has condemned the bombing and asked officials of units in Maguindanao del Sur of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and the 601st Infantry Brigade to help their municipal police probers identify its perpetrators for prosecution.
“It was not the first bombing incident in our municipality. We’ve had similar grenade attacks in recent months that hurt local residents, perpetrated at a time when our municipality is becoming strong economy-wise. We want those behind those bombings identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of law,” Ampatuan said.
Police Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, director of PRO-BAR, said their intelligence units have been mobilized to help local executives and officials of the Shariff Aguak Municipal Police Station put closure to Thursday night’s grenade attack that left four residents wounded.
