MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday confirmed the identities of five Filipinos who were among those killed in the magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago said a forensic team sent to Myanmar on April 4 identified the victims using biological samples and secondary markers.

The team, led by Wilfredo Tierra of the NBI’s Disaster Victim Identification Division, included doctors, a dentist, forensic chemist, DNA analysts, a photographer and support staff.?

The NBI said the team arrived in Yangon on April 4 and examined biological samples, including hair and teeth, collected from two Filipinos previously recovered from the collapsed Sky Villa Condominium in Mandalay, the hardest hit city.

The following day, the team traveled to Mandalay to continue the identification process.

Two additional Filipino fatalities were recovered by local authorities and identified through tattoos, personal items, ID documents and dental comparisons with photographs, the NBI said.

On April 9, the team examined a fifth body retrieved from another condominium and positively identified the remains using dental records.
