CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Up to 6,000 members of the Northern Mindanao police were deployed to secure the celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in this city yesterday.
An estimated 23,000 people attended the local religious activity inspired by the devotion to the original image of the Black Nazarene enshrined at Quiapo Church in Manila, Cagayan de Oro City police chief Col. Dexter Paje said.
The crowd surpassed last year’s attendance of around 13,000 devotees, according to Msgr. Nathaniel Lerio, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and head of the Jesus Nazareno Parish.
Lerio attributed the high turnout of attendees to the declaration of a special non-working day in Cagayan de Oro City as well as in Misamis Oriental, which was celebrating the Kuyamis Festival.
He said foreigners also attended the celebration, which police described as peaceful and orderly.
