Search, rescue, retrieval and clearing operations in the Angeles City building collapse marks their sixth day.
Bureau of Fire Protection Central Luzon
MANILA, Philippines — Six deaths have been confirmed by authorities in Angeles City building collapse as ongoing search, rescue, retrieval, and clearing operations marked their sixth day on Friday, May 29.
“As of 12:40 a.m. today, BFP Special Rescue Force successfully extricated one unidentified body, marking the sixth casualty for the nine-storey collapsed structure incident at Angeles City,” the Bureau of Fire Protection Central Luzon said.
According to Angeles City Mayor Jon Lazatin, the sixth male victim was the father of the fifth victim, whose body was found earlier by authorities.
The retrieval of the body of the son, the fifth victim, took almost 12 hours, according to Lazatin. Rescuers reported that he was retrieved at 7:57 a.m. on May 28. More than 16 hours later, the body of his father was found.
“Meron silang na-locate na katabi mismo ng fifth victim. Binalikan po natin ‘yung area. Hanggang sa makita po natin ‘yung sixth victim,” Lazatin said, speaking with ABS-CBN News.
(They located [a body] right next to the fifth victim. We went back to the area until we saw the sixth victim)
Both bodies have been turned over to their families, Lazatin said.
‘Slow' operations
Fourteen people remain missing as of Friday, May 29.
Statements from families of victims surfaced earlier this week, criticizing the ongoing operations of authorities as “slow”.
“Mabagal po ang proseso nila, usad-pagong po sila. Hindi po sila nagkakaisa na magtulong-tulong,” Lea Casilao, whose live-in partner was among the missing victims, said in an interview with DZMM on May 25. (Their process is slow, at turtle's pace. They don’t cooperate with each other.)
“Kung ang bawat isa po ay nagtutulong-tulong para mas mabilis ang proseso ng pagliligtas nila ng natabunan, sana po may naligtas na sila na mas marami,” she added. (If each one of them will cooperate to speed up the process of rescuing the victims, they could have saved more.)
Another relative of a victim even accused officials of taking action only “when there is a camera”.
“Lumalabas ‘yung mga matataas d’yan kapag may camera tapos iba ang sasabihin,” Bernadette Arrogante, whose brother was among the missing, told News5 on May 25. (The higher ups only show up when there is a camera, then they’re going to say different things.)
“Wala pong update-update dito sa mga pamilya, hindi po nila kami ina-update,” Arrogante added. (There’s no updates for the families, they don’t give us updates.)
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment said victims of the incident will receive cash aid from the government.
A P15,000 cash assistance will be given to the families of deceased workers, while injured workers will receive P10,000.
