MANILA, Philippines — At least seven people have been reportedly killed in Davao after heavy rains triggered landslides in two different localities.
In the Municipality of Monkayo, Davao de Oro, a landslide was reported at around 11 PM on Thursday, February 19 after heavy rains hammered the area.
Monkayo Mayor JayR Zamora confirmed in a Facebook post the death of at least three people.
“There are three victims, one is a father and two are children. Two bodies were recovered around 2:00 in the morning, but due to the continued intensity of the rain and the possibility of a landslide in the area, we stopped the operation around 3:00 in the morning to ensure the safety of our responders. The next morning, the operation continued and the last victim was recovered around 8 am,” Zamora said in Bisaya, as translated into English by Google Translate.
In a separate landslide incident, a family of four—a mother, father and two daughters— was also killed in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental due to a landslide.
“The city government advises Mati residents to remain alert and prepared during calamities. Check the surroundings of your home and monitor weather updates from authorized agencies,” the Mati local government said in a statement on the Philippines News Agency.
