MANILA, Philippines — Just in time for Christmas, 71 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were rescued from scam hubs in Myanmar arrived in the country yesterday, the Department of Migrant Workers said.

In a social media post, the DMW said the OFWs who were victims of illegal recruitment and human trafficking were welcomed by officials during their arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Pasay City.

The OFWs, according to the DMW, underwent standard immigration procedures and national referral mechanism screening to evaluate their status and provide them with the necessary protection.

All the repatriated OFWs will be receiving medical, legal and financial assistance from the government.

As of last month, there were 1,545 OFWs reported to be victims of illegal recruitment and human trafficking in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.
