DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Eight people were reported killed in separate landslides that occurred in Davao region in the past two days.
Authorities have yet to determine whether there are other victims or missing people in the disaster.
The landslides were blamed on continuous heavy rainfall spawned by a shear line that has been affecting the region over the past few days.
The city government of Mati in Davao Oriental confirmed that four members of a family were killed after their house in Barangay Salazar was buried under a pile of rocks and soil yesterday morning.
Authorities said that the fatalities included the father, his pregnant wife and their two daughters.
Mati Mayor Joel Almario reminded his constituents to remain alert and continue monitoring weather updates.
On the same day, a small-scale miner was reported killed in another landslide that occurred in Pantukan, Davao de Oro.
Reports said the fatality was found under the rubble of mud and trees in Barangay Napnapan.
On Thursday night, three people were also buried alive when a hilly area in Monkayo town, also located in Davao de Oro, collapsed.
The fatalities were reportedly asleep in their house in Barangay Rizal when the landslide occurred shortly before midnight.
The Davao region disaster risk reduction and management council said that heavy rainfall inundated 14 barangays across the region, displacing 997 families who sought shelter in evacuation centers.
School officials in all five provinces in the region as well as in Davao City suspended classes in all levels due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the shear line would bring rain in parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
PAGASA said the weather system would bring scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms, which may cause flash floods and landslides, in Mindanao as well as in Eastern and Central Visayas.
Heavy or orange rainfall warning is raised over Surigao del Sur until tomorrow afternoon.
Eastern Samar, Leyte and Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas as well as Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands and Surigao provinces in Mindanao are under yellow warning rainfall until tomorrow afternoon. — Josiah Antonio
