MANILA, Philippines — Over 900 Bureau of Fire Protection personnel in Metro Manila were relieved from their posts yesterday as part of an internal cleansing to rid the BFP of corruption.
BFP officer-in-charge Chief Supt. Rico Neil Kwan Tiu sacked 902 fire safety inspectors assigned in the bureau’s National Capital Region (NCR) field unit.
Kwan Tiu said qualified BFP personnel who have served as fire safety inspectors would take over the posts of those who were sacked.
“If the BFP-NCR lacks enough personnel, fire safety inspectors outside Metro Manila would fill the gap,” he said.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who has administrative control and supervision over the BFP, has criticized illegal activities of fire safety inspectors such as forcing business owners to purchase overpriced fire extinguishers.
Kwan Tiu said the relief of the BFP personnel is necessary to address the systemic corruption in the bureau.
BFP chief Jesus Fernandez has been suspended for alleged corruption. He is facing cases of graft, bribery, malversation of public funds and conspiracy after allegedly receiving P14.75 million in kickbacks for the procurement of 132 type 1 basic life support ambulances when he headed the bids and awards committee.
