MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power Corp. is ramping up the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in its coal-fired power plants across the country following its successful implementation in Mindanao.

AboitizPower, through its Transition Business Group (TBG), intends to incorporate AI and data analytics into its coal fleet in Luzon and the Visayas in line with efforts to enhance the efficiency of the facilities.

The company is expanding its “Project Arkanghel,” an initiative aimed at modernizing its existing coal plants into smart ones to ensure availability and reliability. The move is set to be implemented in phases.

“The first phase of Project Arkanghel is up and running, currently in one of our circulating fluidized bed plants in Mindanao,” AboitizPower TBG president and COO Celso Caballero III said.

He was referring to the 300-megawatt (MW) coal plant in Davao City under AboitizPower unit Therma South Inc.

“We’re completing implementation in the Visayas this year and moving to Luzon next year,” Caballero said.

The 340-MW Therma Visayas Inc. in Cebu was named as one of the pioneer models for Project Arkanghel, while the company has yet to identify a site for Luzon.

Under Project Arkanghel, AboitizPower established a unified operations center equipped with digital twin technologies, early warning and anomaly detection systems, and an end-to-end live asset health monitoring system.

The center allows the company to address potential issues and optimize plant operations.

For this purpose, AboitizPower has also teamed up with Thailand-based REPCO NEX Industrial Solutions for the development of Project Arkanghel.

“Power demand growth aside, if your plants are more available, you will be able to build fewer plants in order to cover for shortages,” Caballero underscored.

The expansion of Project Arkanghel is a step toward achieving a balanced energy mix strategy, AboitizPower noted.

By 2030, the energy arm of the AboitizGroup aims to have a total net attributable sellable capacity of 9,200 MW, split between conventional and renewable power sources.
