MANILA, Philippines — The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has asked the Government Service Insurance System to grant P20,000 in calamity aid to all GSIS members affected by recent typhoons, flooding and earthquakes.
ACT chair Ruby Bernardo said the petition was signed by thousands of government employees as a response to the impact of disasters that affected 59 out of 82 provinces nationwide.
“Many of us will celebrate Christmas with roofs torn off or blown away, walls destroyed or demolished and equipment submerged or washed away by floods. Despite the amount of damage, our public service continues,” Bernardo said, referring to teachers, health personnel and other government employees.
She stressed that the loans and payment moratoriums offered are not enough and only deepen the debt burden of struggling workers.
“That is why we expect the GSIS to show its care for its members in the face of the crisis and the impact of successive calamities exacerbated by shoddy and substandard projects funded from our taxes. It would be a big deal for us if the GSIS could grant our call for P20,000 aid to help us get back on our feet a few days before Christmas and before we welcome the new year,” Bernardo said.
She added that the GSIS, as a top-earning government-owned and controlled corporation, has the capacity and obligation to extend meaningful and timely assistance to its members during calamities.
