Nearly a year since his Olympic coup, Carlos Yulo returns to action and snags the all-around bronze in the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino gymnastics ace Carlos Yulo continued his medal ways in his first competition since he made history in the Paris Olympics.
The Philippines’ first double Olympic gold medalist, Yulo snagged the men’s individual all-around bronze in the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea, on Thursday, June 5.
Yulo totaled 83.633 points from the six apparatuses as he finished behind the Japanese duo of Shinnosuke Oka and Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, who placed first and second, respectively.
Oka lived up to his billing as the reigning Olympic all-around champion by garnering 85.134 points to clinch the gold, while Hasegawa edged Yulo for the silver with 83.967 points.
Yulo posted his highest marks in the two events where he won his two Olympic gold medals, earning 14.433 points in floor exercise and averaging 14.400 points in vault as he advanced to the finals of both apparatuses.
He emerged as the top qualifier in floor exercise then second in vault behind Iran’s Mahdi Olfati.
The 25-year-old star also reached the finals of parallel bars with 14.167 points (4th), still rings with 13.633 points (7th), and horizontal bar with 13.800 points (10th), with his lowest score coming in pommel horse (13.100).
While only the top eight gymnasts will advance for each apparatus, Yulo still made the horizontal bar final due to the two-per-country rule as four Japanese placed in the top eight.
Although he failed to defend the all-around title he captured last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, it was still a commendable performance for Yulo considering he had been out of action for 10 months since his Paris coup.
Filipino gymnasts Juancho Miguel Besana finished 22nd overall in the all-around with 71.167 points followed by John Ivan Cruz at 29th with 60.667, Justine Ace de Leon at 31st with 59.167, and Jhon Romeo Santillan at 55th with 18.067.
Cruz will join Yulo in the eight-man vault final after ranking seventh with a 13.533 average.
Japan topped the team all-around event as well, while China and Kazakhstan completed the podium at second and third, respectively.
Yulo returns to action in the floor exercise and rings finals on Saturday, June 7, then in the vault and parallel bars finals on Sunday, June 6. – Rappler.com
