CANDON City, Ilocos Sur — Kang Sowhi and the South Koreans overpowered Alas Pilipinas, but the main gunner was impressed by the Filipinos’ improvement and Niña Ytang, in the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup.

South Korea cruised to a 3-0 record in Pool A, sending Alas Pilipinas to the brink of elimination, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22, on Tuesday at Candon City Arena here.

Kang paced South Korea with a match-high 19 points, including the killer blows, that ended Alas’ gallant stand in the third, led by veterans Alyssa Valdez and Ara Galang.

“Compared to before, I can feel the Philippines, as a team, has improved a lot. Since most of the Asian teams are at pretty equal levels right now, I think we fought really hard until the end. And it kind of worked out,” said Kang.

Kang was impressed by Ytang, the rookie middle blocker who scored eight points against the Koreans.

“Number 9, the middle blocker, she’s really fast. Her fighting spirit, it was very impressive,” she said.

In an interview with Cignal, Ytang was surprised to learn that she caught the attention of the Korean star.

“Really?!  Thank you! Kamsahamnida!” Ytang said.

“I must be doing something right. For me, I’m just doing my best, doing everything I can for the country. I’m offering everything that I can do for all our supporters.”

Kang and the Koreans were also grateful for the warm welcome from the Philippine crowd despite being on the opposing side.

“I thought they would not cheer for us, but the fans had a really good manner. We had a great game today,” Kang said.
