MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala faces a tall order as she takes on World No. 2 Elena Rybakina on Sunday in the Round of 32 of the Italian Open.
It will be the first meeting between the two players, with the match scheduled for 4 p.m. Manila time.
Rybakina is one of the top players on the WTA Tour. She won this year’s Australian Open after defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka for her second Grand Slam title.
She opened her Italian Open campaign with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Maria Sakkari.
Eala, meanwhile, advanced to the third round in Rome after an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over World No. 33 Wang Xinyu on Friday. She also beat Magdalena Fręch in the opening round.
While it will be another tough matchup for Eala, the Filipino rising star is no stranger to beating top-ranked players on tour, helping fuel her rise in the rankings over the past year.
Eala is deep into her clay-court campaign as she gears up for the French Open.
