Alex Eala to see action in upgraded Singapore Tennis Open

MANILA, Philippines —Alex Eala is set to compete in the Singapore Tennis Open from September 21 to 27 at OCBC Arena.

Tournament organizers announced that the Filipino tennis star will be part of the second edition of the event, which has been upgraded to a WTA 500 tournament after debuting as a WTA 250 last year.

“As part of the WTA’s Asian Swing, the STO plays an important role in the latter half of the season, where players build momentum towards the year-end championships,” the tournament worte.

“This makes Singapore a key staging ground for top talent during a decisive stretch of the tour. The upgraded status is expected to attract a strong and competitive international field with more player announcements to follow.”

Eala is currently playing her best run on the grass surface, reaching the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career after beating Renata Zarazua.

She takes on Maya Joint next, hoping for her best Grand Slam campaign.

The 21-year-old tennis star expressed her excitement to be part of the 28-player singles draw in Singapore.

“Singapore has a really special place in my heart and I still remember competing there at the WTA Future Stars as a junior player. I have always enjoyed playing in Singapore because it’s so close to home and it’s great to have a WTA 500 event in Southeast Asia,” Eala said.

The tournament, however, coincides with the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which run from September 19 to October 4.

Eala has yet to confirm whether she will represent the Philippines in the continental meet. She competed in the previous Asian Games in 2023, where she won a bronze medal.

Last December, she made history with a gold medal run in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
