MANILA, Philippines — The share of electrified vehicles in total automotive sales is expected to rise to 30 percent this year, more than double last year’s 12 percent, as more consumers shift to new types of vehicles amid rising fuel prices, according to the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP).

“We forecast a 30 percent market share of EV from total vehicle sales for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles,” EVAP chairman emeritus Ferdinand Raquelsantos said in a Viber message yesterday.

Last year, sales of electrified vehicles covering hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles reached 58,905 units, accounting for 12 percent of total automotive sales.

In 2024, the share of electrified vehicle sales in total automotive sales was only at 5.5 percent.

While sales of electrified vehicles have been increasing, Raquelsantos said EVAP members have seen more inquiries since fuel prices started rising due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

“(There are) a lot of inquiries right now and sales are picking up more than expected,” he said.

Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. president Jose Maria Atienza said in a Viber message that the group has been seeing a continuous increase in sales and demand for electrified vehicles in recent years.

“The interest in these cars is magnified during periods of significant fuel price increase,” he said.

Amid the recent surge in oil prices, he said electrified vehicles are considered part of the solution.

“This indicates the growing market awareness and understanding of the benefits of electrified technologies, which includes energy savings,” he said.

While demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow, he said there are also customers considering other choices such as smaller vehicles with low displacement engines.

“Whatever car they choose, we encourage Filipinos to exercise fuel and energy saving driving habits at all times,” he said.
