CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur — Alyssa Valdez relished the opportunity to lead the mix of newcomers and veterans of Alas Pilipinas in the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup. Valdez made her national team comeback after three years and delivered the goods with 14 points, as Alas swept Uzbekistan, 25-16, 25-12, 25-14, in Pool A on Saturday at Candon City Arena here.

The Alas captain is reunited with her fellow national team veterans Jov Gonzaga and Ces Molina under interim coach Shaq Delos Santos after they last played together in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. “It feels really good. We never thought we’d have the chance to be back here together again, but we’re here now. We’re taking this opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with the younger players in the national team,” said Valdez in Filipino after dropping 11 kills, two blocks, and an ace.   The 32-year-old outside spiker also represented the flag with Creamline teammates Kyle Negrito, Kyla Atienza, and Tots Carlos since the club last carried the flag in 2022.   Valdez also teamed up with Ara Galang for the first time with other veterans Royse Tubino and Alyssa Eroa.

She also savored the chance to lead younger players, like Niña Ytang, who had 12 points on her Alas debut, as well as Alyssa Solomon, Thea Gagate, Tin Ubaldo, and Cla Loresco.

“It’s also great to see that the younger players have become leaders in their own right. Their personalities and character have grown so much throughout the three weeks we’ve been together. We’re very happy to be here and to witness their growth as individuals,” said Valdez.

Valdez and Alas battle Australia in Pool A for their second win on Sunday at 3 p.m.
