MANILA, Philippines — Education Secretary Sonny Angara kicked off the nationwide Brigada Eskwela, the multisectoral school readiness campaign, in Agusan del Norte yesterday, in preparation for the opening of public basic education schools on June 8.

In a statement, Angara said the Brigada Eskwela is highlighted this year through the strengthened partnership between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Labor and Employment through the DOLE’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers or TUPAD program.

“The Brigada Eskwela shows the strength of our bayanihan for the future of the youth. Through the guidance of President Marcos, we combined the TUPAD and the Brigada not just to prepare the schools, but to also create livelihood to families in need,” Angara said.

Executive Secretary Ralph Recto said the government is hiring 243,000 people nationwide for Brigada Eskwela under the TUPAD program.

From June 1 to 5, TUPAD beneficiaries will be deployed to public schools across the country and receive P5,000 in compensation.

“While we prepare better and safer schools for our students, we also provide jobs and income for their parents and relatives,” Recto said.

Angara said the DOLE allocated around P2 billion to bankroll short-term cash-for-work initiatives for school preparation, prioritizing public schools in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, underserved communities and disaster-affected areas.

He said priority in the TUPAD hiring is given to qualified parents and relatives of learners, giving them temporary employment before the school opening.

Alongside the national launch, simultaneous regional kick-offs were held in Schools Division Offices in Nueva Ecija, Batangas City, Puerto Princesa City, Talisay City, Calbayog City and Davao City.

Meanwhile, Alliance of Concerned Teachers chairperson Ruby Bernardo yesterday lamented that despite the DepEd receiving P1.015 trillion of the national budget, there are teachers who still use their personal money to cover some of the cost of classroom repairs.
