MANILA, Philippines — Another round of fuel price increases is set to greet motorists today, pushing diesel’s total net rise to P7 per liter since the start of the year.

In separate advisories, Seaoil, Jetti, Caltex, Petron and PTT Philippines announced an upward adjustment of P1.20 per liter for gasoline and P0.60 per liter for diesel and kerosene.

The latest price movements extend the upward trend for diesel and gasoline to eight and six consecutive weeks, respectively.

Rodela Romero, assistant director at the Department of Energy, attributed the hike mainly to rising geopolitical tensions, particularly in Iran.

“The risk of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz and the uncertainty around Iran nuclear talks added a risk premium,” Romero said.

The strait, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a key trade route for about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supply.

Also fueling supply concerns were reports suggesting that the United States may intercept vessels carrying Iranian crude, Romero said.

“Supply flow disruptions and constraints have also lifted prices as Europe moves away from diesel processed from Russian-origin feedstock to sanctions-compliant supplies from other sources,” Jetti president Leo Bellas said.

Last week, major oil firms hiked prices of diesel by P1 per liter and gasoline and kerosene by P0.60 per liter.
