Another suspect in student’s hazing death surrenders

MANILA, Philippines —  Another member of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity has surrendered to police in connection with a hazing incident that resulted in the death of a freshman maritime student.

Dar Sabilona, 26, surrendered to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR) at Camp Crame in Quezon City at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, according to Jayve Grospe, counsel for the suspect.

Sabilona was among the fraternity members tagged by Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla in the hazing death of 19-year-old Mark Kenneth Alcedo in General Trias, Cavite.

Sabilona is the seventh to surrender after six others gave themselves up last week.

Grospe said his client preferred to surrender to the CIDG-NCR for safety, adding that Sabilona wanted to clear his name.

“I advised him that if his conscience is clear, he should come out and surrender,” Grospe said.

He said he has yet to talk to Sabilona regarding his supposed involvement in the hazing.

CIDG-NCR chief Col. John Guiagui said Sabilona would be turned over to the General Trias police, which is investigating the incident.

“We are exerting efforts to reach out to others tagged in the incident. We are expecting more to appear in our office,” Guiagui said.

Earlier, Remulla warned the suspects to surrender or face a police manhunt.  He said he met with officials of the Tau Gamma Phi to discuss the incident.
