Are Manila’s Ongpin and Morayta streets made for walking?

From uneven and narrow sidewalks to the presence of obstructions, a lot of what Rappler saw along the way are a common sight in the city’s many streets

MANILA, Philippines – While walking on the streets of Manila, have you ever tripped? Did it feel like playing patintero with incoming vehicles? Was it as if you were training in a parkour gym?

These are some of the many questions a pedestrian who frequents Manila would most likely answer “yes” to.

Rappler headed to two of Manila’s busiest streets, Ongpin in Binondo and Morayta in Sampaloc, to see how many hazards can be spotted along the way.

From uneven and narrow sidewalks to the presence of obstructions, a lot of what Rappler saw along the way are a common sight in the city’s many streets.

Given the heavy foot traffic in two of the areas that were visited, the Manila LGU, even through the barangays, should consider policy initiatives that may ease the burden faced by pedestrians. These actions would not only benefit pedestrians who frequent these places but also the communities that reside in them.
