ITOGON, Benguet , Philippines —The municipal government has condemned the dumping of carcasses of pigs infected with African swine fever or ASF in several ravines in this mining town.

Itogon Mayor Bernard Waclin said this might have been the work of unscrupulous traders who were trying to sell infected hogs to buyers.

Waclin said police have identified several persons of interest in the attempt to transport the ASF-infected hogs from the lowlands to Itogon.

The planned sale reportedly fell through after the pigs began emitting a foul odor, indicating they had been dead for several days.

Waclin noted that several sacks containing pig carcasses were found dumped in a ravine in Barangay Poblacion last week.

A similar incident was later reported along Midas Road.

Waclin said the tests conducted by the Itogon agriculture office, in coordination with the Benguet government and Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, confirmed that the carcasses were positive for ASF.
