BAGUIO CITY , Philippines — A 10-year solid waste management plan covering 2025 to 2034 and drafted by the city government of Baguio has been approved by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) .
Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the NSWMC announced the approval through Resolution 198-A, and after carefully reviewing the city’s waste management plan.
Magalong said the plan complies with Republic Act 9003, which requires local government units to submit long-term waste management plans for approval.
The office of the mayor will submit the approved plan to the Baguio City Council for adoption.
The NSWMC ordered the city government to submit annual progress reports, noting that the approval may be withdrawn if the plan is not properly implemented.
Eugene Buyucan, chief of the city’s general services office, said the plan intends to reduce the amount of garbage to be generated over the next decade, and make Baguio a model for waste reduction and proper disposal.
Waste diversion in the city is projected to increase from 180 to 420 tons per day by 2034, while waste disposal is seen to drop from 290 to 180 tons per day, with improvements expected to balance out by 2028 or 2029.
