OVER 500 barangay health workers and nutrition scholars in Victorias City in Negros Occidental will now get social security protection under a Social Security System (SSS) program following the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the agency and the concerned local government unit (LGU).
SSS Acting Senior Vice President for Visayas Operations Group Alberto Montalbo said that the city government was the first LGU in the country to become a contribution subsidy provider for barangay health workers and nutrition scholars under its Contribution Subsidy Provider (CSP) program.
The LGU will shoulder the SSS contributions of 495 barangay health workers and 26 nutrition scholars for a year worth P4.75 million, said Montalbo in a statement emailed to The Manila Times.
"SSS commends the city government's commitment in protecting its frontline workers through social security membership. We hope that this partnership will serve as a model for other local government units to follow and we look forward to replicating this success in other areas," Montalbo said.
Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez said that this was more than just a program but a commitment to social security protection.

"It's a promise of providing the long-term security you deserve for the selfless work you do for the 'Victoriasanon' families," Benitez said.
Under the CSP, the subsidy provider shall pay the contributions of self-employed workers, land-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), or voluntary members.
"A CSP could be a private or government individual or group willing to subsidize the SSS contributions of identified members. By participating in the CSPP, companies can demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility and employee welfare while contributing to the social security protection of Filipinos," Montalbo explained.
A similar MOA was sealed between the SSS and the Life Builder Fellowship in Bulacan, with the latter sponsoring the monthly SSS contributions of church volunteers under the same program.
SSS Vice President for Luzon Central 2 Division Gloria Corazon Andrada said that it (Life Builder Fellowship) pledged to shoulder the monthly SSS contributions of an initial group of 10 dedicated volunteers for a minimum of six months.
The SSS cited the Life Builder Fellowship's effort which reflects the church's holistic mission, providing not only spiritual guidance but also the long-term financial stability of its members through active social security membership.
Life Builder Fellowship's Head Pastor Jesus Bagasin Jr. said that they believe that serving God should not come at the cost of one's future.
"By taking responsibility for our volunteers' SSS contributions, we are not only fostering their spiritual growth but also securing their financial future. This is our way of honoring those who have tirelessly served the church and the broader community," said Bagasin.
