MANILA, Philippines — Wind Signal No. 1 has been raised over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao amid threats posed by Tropical Depression Basyang, which is expected to intensify into a tropical storm today, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
As of 5 p.m. yesterday, PAGASA said the center of Basyang was estimated at 655 kilometers east of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.
Basyang was moving westward at 15 kilometers per hour, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
A gale warning was raised over the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao.
PAGASA said Basyang would gradually intensify as it passes over the Philippine Sea.
Wind Signal No. 1 was raised over the southern portions of Eastern Samar and Samar, Southern Leyte, and central and southern portions of Leyte.
The same wind signal was hoisted over Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Camiguin, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur as well as over the eastern portion of Misamis Oriental and the northern portion of Davao Oriental.
PAGASA said the surge of the northeast monsoon or amihan will bring strong to gale-force gusts over the same areas, particularly in coastal and upland communities.
A minimal to moderate risk of storm surge with peak heights reaching up to two meters is expected within the next 48 hours over low-lying communities in Davao Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.
PAGASA said Basyang is expected to make landfall in eastern Mindanao between Thursday night and Friday morning.
After the landfall, Basyang will weaken into a tropical depression while traversing the Visayas, and will be downgraded to a low-pressure area by Sunday.
As this developed, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has raised a blue alert status in preparation for Basyang.
The agency said it is ready to deploy food items in areas to be affected by Basyang. – Jose Rodel Clapano, Evelyn Macairan
