The once chubby actor-comedian Bearwin Meily lost several acting projects when he started his weight loss journey.
“To be honest, it (the fitness journey) didn’t help (in my showbiz career),” he told The STAR in a one-on-one interview on the sidelines of a presscon for the My Daily Collagen triathlon event happening this weekend.
“Because when I started running, that’s the time that I lost weight. Nung pumayat ako, I no longer look like Bearwin Meily (that people used to see on screen).”
“Even before, at the time of our friend, the late (STAR entertainment editor) Ricky Lo and other media (members), I was big then. I was very active in movies. But when I started changing my lifestyle and engaging in sports like triathlon, dun ako nawalan ng project because my physical appearance changed. ‘Pumayat ka, hindi ka na yung comedic style, hindi ka na malaki,’” he added.
Despite the impact on his income due to what happened, he remained optimistic. “But then again I always say this, ‘The Lord is my provider.’ Hindi Siya nagkulang sa akin. Up to this very moment, I’m still alive.”
Bearwin jumpstarted his showbiz career in the ABS-CBN sitcom, “Palibhasa Lalake,” and appeared in “Super Laff-In,” “Bida si Mister, Bida si Misis,” “Home Sweetie Home” and in GMA Network’s “Kool Ka Lang” and “Mulawin.” He was also part of Star Circle Batch 6.
In movies, he provided the comic relief in “Bakit ‘Di Totohanin,” “Gagamboy,” “When I Met U,” among others.
Bearwin now owns a family clothing brand business AO1, does church ministry duties and produces online content. He just wrapped up filming NET25’s sitcom “Quizon CT” with the Quizon family, Jeffrey, Eric, Vandolph and others.

Asked if he had any regrets when he lost acting stints after losing weight, he said, “Maybe at first but sandaling-sandali lang. I have a lot of friends who are at the same age, turning 50, who got sick. They have maintenance but me, by God’s Grace, I didn’t regret choosing health over wealth. They say health is wealth. So you have money but aanhin mo yung damo kung patay na yung kabayo?”
He stressed the importance of living a simple life. “And enjoying triathlon, the sports, and activities with friends and family, I think that’s the best for me,” he added.
Bearwin started running in 2009. He is gearing up for the fifth edition of the My Daily Collagen Triathlon event, under the theme “Where Stars Are Born,” on March 9 in Subic Bay. He will join his son Ico, alongside Mojofly vocalist, former “Eat Bulaga!” host and FIT PH’s Lougee Basabas, actor-model Kristoffer Martin, celebrity athletes Alou and Aira Lopez, and head coach of PNY Tribe Vanessa Agdon in the event.

He is training four times a week for his upcoming race, which marked his first event for the health and wellness collagen drink supplement brand.
“So last year, yung anak ko lang kumarera. That was also March if I’m not mistaken. I told my son that I will join this year. But from then on — March, April, May — I was already training. I previously joined different races of triathlon and multi-sport (events),” Bearwin said.
The actor-comedian discovered My Daily Collagen just last year and met its chief sales officer Oliver Salas, owner Anna Perez, and other brand executives.
