Vange Alinsug and Shaira Jardio, the surprise Final MVPs in NU’s latest title romp, promise to work even harder to sustain the UAAP volleyball dynasty built by three-time Bella Belen and the Lady Bulldogs’ core

MANILA, Philippines – As National University’s champion core bids farewell, two young, capable talents show why the Lady Bulldogs are in good hands.

Shaira Jardio and Vange Alinsug stepped up when it mattered, helping NU complete its back-to-back title bid in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament with performances that earned them both the Finals Most Valuable Player plum.

With leaders Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Erin Pangilinan, and Sheena Toring expected to wrap up their collegiate run, the spotlight now falls on Jardio and Alinsug starting next season.

“Knowing that they’re about to leave… we hope the rest of the team will carry the lessons next season,” Alinsug said in Filipino after NU completed a series sweep of La Salle on Wednesday, May 14.

“We know that even if our seniors, our first six, won’t be around, and there are many leaving, we have more strong players joining the team. And we’ll work hard until the next season comes around again.”

Alinsug erupted for 21 points in Game 1, and again played a crucial role in Game 2 to finish with 9 points.

Jardio, the team’s libero, delivered 18 digs and 28 receptions in the opener, then stayed consistent in Game 2 with 21 digs and 12 receptions.

“Whether we win an award or not, we know we’ll be the leaders of the team,” said Alinsug. “We know there’s still room for improvement and we have a long way to go. But for now, we just want to enjoy our win with our seniors.”

Still, Jardio said the individual plums will serve as a big motivation for them heading into their three-peat bid next year.

Belen also gave her vote of confidence, noting that Alinsug and Jardio are more than capable to lead.

“We see in training how hardworking the two are, and we know them personally, that they will take care of the team,” the three-time MVP said in Filipino.

“It doesn’t matter who leaves or graduates, I know that NU will be left in good hands.” – Rappler.com
