Kristina Concepcion Belano of Calape National High School delivered the first gold medal for Central Visayas after helping the region win the Chess Blitz Team Event in the country’s premier national school sports competition, organized by the Department of Education.
Belano played a crucial role on her assigned board, securing key victories that propelled the Central Visayas squad to the championship finish against some of the nation’s strongest regional teams.

Chess blitz is a fast-paced format that requires rapid calculation, precision, and quick decision-making under strict time controls. In team events, every player’s result contributes to the squad’s overall standing.
Sports officials and supporters praised Belano’s composure and tactical sharpness under pressure, saying her performance was instrumental in securing the historic gold medal for Region VII.
The victory also marked a milestone for Bohol sports as Belano etched her name in history by helping deliver Central Visayas’ first gold medal in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
Meanwhile, another Boholano athlete, Jhul Ian Cañalita of Tabuan National High School in Garcia Hernandez town, dominated the track anew after winning the gold medal in the Secondary Boys 5,000-meter run.
Dubbed the “Golden Boy of Bohol,” Cañalita showcased exceptional endurance, disciplined pacing, and a powerful finishing kick to successfully defend his title and secure a back-to-back gold medal performance for Central Visayas.
The achievements of Belano and Cañalita added to Region VII’s growing medal haul and brought honor to Bohol in the ongoing national sporting event. /coa
