COTABATO CITY— A bystander was injured when two men on a motorcycle set off a fragmentation grenade in front of a newly constructed fast food outlet in Lamitan City, Basilan, on Tuesday night, March 3, causing panic among nearby residents.

Grenade shrapnel perforated the glass pane on one side of the building, located in Barangay Malakas, Lamitan City.

Local officials said the fast food outlet branch was scheduled to begin operations this weekend.

Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, and Lt. Col. Elmer Solon, Lamitan City police chief, separately told reporters on Wednesday, March 4, that the grenade attack left 22-year-old Reveil Masulog, a resident of Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur, wounded.

Masulog was immediately transported to a hospital by emergency responders from the Lamitan City mayor’s office for treatment.

Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay condemned the bombing of the newly established fast food outlet in Barangay Malakas.

The two motorcycle-riding suspects fled the scene and are now the subject of an extensive police manhunt.

“It was a barbaric attack. I will flex my authority, exhaust the powers vested in me by the Local Government Code in identifying its perpetrators for them to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law,” Furigay said.

He said he has directed all 40 barangay officials in Lamitan City to assist the city police and Army intelligence units in identifying the two men responsible for the bombing so they can be prosecuted.
