MANILA, Philippines — A landslide in Cagayan de Oro claimed the lives of a married couple and two children amid heavy downpours from Tropical Depression "Basyang," the Office of Civil Defense said Friday.

OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said the four casualties came from a single household in Barangay Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City. The victims, two of whom were minors, were reportedly trapped inside their home when the landslide struck Thursday evening, February 5.

While the cause is still being confirmed, authorities believe heavy rains likely triggered the landslide.

"The cause of the landslide is due to heavy rains, but still for validation if due to TC Basyang or other weather disturbances," Mariano told reporters in a message.

Disaster risk reduction officials are continuing their clearing operations in the area, while preparing the victims' remains for burial.

Misamis Oriental, home to Cagayan de Oro, remains under Wind Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression Basyang brings strong to gale-force winds. PAGASA said coastal communities will face minimal to moderate storm surge risks of up to 2 meters in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, very rough seas reaching 4 meters are forecast along the Misamis Oriental seaboards. The state weather bureau warned that sea travel is risky for all types of vessels and urged mariners to stay in port and seek shelter immediately.

As of 8 a.m. on Friday, Basyang had affected 1,848 families, or 6,152 people, most of whom have been evacuated to evacuation centers, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Basyang was last spotted over the coastal waters of Anda, Bohol, moving west-northwest at 10 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of up to 55 kph and gusts reaching 70 kph.

It is expected to weaken into a low pressure area by Saturday, February 7, as it crosses Central Visayas and the Negros Island Region.
