MANILA, Philippines — Caritas Manila, the lead social services and development ministry of the Catholic Church, will hold its annual Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) Telethon on Monday, June 16.
The event will be broadcast live from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. via Radio Veritas 846 and streamed online through dzRV 846 and Caritas Manila’s official Facebook page.
This year, the telethon aims to raise funds for 4,465 YSLEP scholars, with 1,315 students expected to graduate by the end of School Year 2024-2025.
Among them are 144 YSLEP-Gen129 scholars enrolled in agriculture, an initiative that supports Caritas Manila’s advocacy for food security.
Last year’s telethon raised around P3.5 million and it helped the ministry produce 1,129 graduates, 509 of whom earned academic honors.
YSLEP is a nationwide program run in partnership with 142 Caritas Manila implementing partners and 52 dioceses. It prioritizes the poorest of the poor, indigenous communities and those affected by calamities, war and conflict.
Aside from financial support, YSLEP also offers holistic formation by promoting values-based servant leadership and empowering underprivileged youth to break the cycle of poverty through education and character development.
Graduates are encouraged to give back through the Caritas Manila Alumni Scholars Association and its stewardship initiative, “Balik Handog.”
“We believe that education is the great social equalizer,” said Rev. Fr. Anton Pascual, Caritas Manila’s executive director.
According to the ministry, a donation of P30,000 can support one YSLEP scholar for an entire year, or P83 a day to help change a life through education.
