Bohol's Jhul Ian Cañalita sets new Palarong Pambansa marks in the secondary boys' 5,000m run and 3,000m steeple chase

ILOCOS NORTE, Philippines – Breaking a Palarong Pambansa record was so nice, Central Visayas’ Jhul Ian Cañalita had to do it twice.

Cañalita shattered another Palaro mark as he dominated the secondary boys’ 3,000m meter steeple chase at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Laoag City here on Wednesday, May 28.

The Boholano from Tabuan National High School clocked 9 minutes and 23.89 seconds to erase the previous record of 9:35.2 set by Central Visayas’ Jerry Vasquez in 2019.

He won the gold with a sizable lead as Cañalita finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Calabarzon’s Jerico Cadag.

Cadag also surpassed the previous Palaro record but settled for silver with a time 9:33.30, while Cagayan Valley’s Elmer Dizon snagged bronze with 9:38.19.

Dreaming of making it to the Olympics, Cañalita capped a Palaro stint to remember as he also smashed the decades-long record in the 5,000m run on Tuesday, May 27.

Cañalita timed 15:16.31 to eclipse the former Palaro mark of 15:38.4 established by Cresencio Cabal of Southern Mindanao (now Davao) in 1998. – Rappler.com
