MANILA, Philippines — Many Filipinos – mostly women – continue to marry foreign nationals, with migrant unions averaging around 70,000 annually, according to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas.
At a weekly forum yesterday, CFO chairman Dante Ang said the volume of these marriages has remained largely steady over the years.
Although the figure dipped from 2023 to 2024, Ang said the numbers are poised to rebound.
“This year it looks like we will return to the annual average of 70,000. After the downtrend, we will go back to the 10-year high of 2016,” he added.
Based on CFO data, Americans remain the most common foreign spouses of Filipinos, followed by Japanese nationals.
Ang also expressed confidence that the current political climate will not discourage overseas Filipinos from sending remittances or extending other forms of support back home.
“If you look at the historical record, Filipinos’ concern for the country does not stop. They continue their programs beyond economic contributions,” he said.
