MANILA, Philippines — Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle delivered the sermon at the commissioning of an Anglican bishop in Rome, in a sign of continued ecumenical engagement between the two major churches.

In a report published April 28, the Anglican Communion News Service said Tagle preached during the commissioning service for Bishop Anthony Ball at the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola.

"The preacher was His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect in the Dicastery for Evangelization," the report said.

Ball has been appointed as the representative in Rome of Sarah Mullally, the archbishop of Canterbury.

The commissioning took place during Mullally's visit to Rome, which also included a meeting with Pope Leo XIV.

Ball said the service reflected the development of relations between the two Christian traditions.

"Indeed, the Commissioning itself is a mark of how our ecumenical relationships have developed," he said, according to the ACNS report.

He cited Tagle's sermon, a joint blessing and the participation of different church communities as signs of closer cooperation.

The service was held at the Jesuit-run Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and featured a choir composed of members from All Saints' Church, St. Paul's Within the Walls and the New Chamber Singers.
