CJ Cansino pours all his 20 points in the 2nd half as Meralco douses NLEX’s red-hot streak in the PBA Philippine Cup, while undermanned San Miguel still embarrasses Blackwater by 37
MANILA, Philippines – CJ Cansino took over for the Meralco Bolts as they put an end to the NLEX Road Warriors’ red-hot streak in the PBA Philippine Cup with a 108-92 win at the PhilSports Arena on Sunday, May 25.
Cansino sizzled for 20 points, all coming in the second half, as Meralco picked up its second straight win to move up to an even 5-5 slate, while preventing NLEX from notching its seventh consecutive victory.
With Meralco on top by just 7 late in the third period, 75-68, Cansino suddenly caught fire and dropped 13 straight points bridging the third and fourth quarters to put the Bolts ahead by 16, 88-72, with 9:20 left on the game clock.
That 16-point Meralco advantage built mostly by Cansino proved just enough the rest of the way as NLEX never got within single digits again until the final buzzer.
Aside from Cansino, Chris Newsome came to play for the Bolts as he scored a team-best 21 points.
Bong Quinto supported Newsome and Cansino with 18 points, while Chris Banchero and the returning Cliff Hodge came up with 16 and 12 markers, respectively.
For the Road Warriors — who absorbed only their second loss in eight games — Robert Bolick topscored with a game-high 22 points, but shot a dismal 5-of-18 clip from the field.
Earlier, the undermanned San Miguel Beermen claimed their third straight win after making light work of the lowly Blackwater Bossing, 115-78.
CJ Perez led six San Miguel players in double-digit scoring with a game-high 20 points, while June Mar Fajardo posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds.
JM Calma stepped up with 16 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting, Don Trollano put up 15 points, while Jericho Cruz and Chris Ross had 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Beermen, who missed the services of Marcio Lassiter, Juami Tiongson, and Jeron Teng all due to sore eyes.
With the victory, San Miguel moved up to a 6-2 slate, boosting its chances for a top four finish that comes with a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Christian David paced the Bossing in their fifth straight setback with 15 points as Sedrick Barefield — who went off for 32 points in their 101-99 loss to Barangay Ginebra just two days ago — was limited to only 5 points on a forgettable 2-of-14 shooting night.
The Bossing dropped to a 1-7 record – tied with the Terrafirma Dyip at the bottom of the standings.
